Northwest Vietnam Cycling to the “Roof of Indochina”

Start & end in Hanoi 7 days Up to 15

About this trip

Seven days cycling through the mountains of northern Vietnam, an area still relatively under the radar despite roads that have improved a lot in recent years. Expect long days in the saddle through pass roads, mountain ranges up to 3,000 metres and stretches of dense rainforest.

This is a serious riding trip rather than a gentle pedal — five stages covering 683km in total, with over 11,000m of climbing along the way. A rest day in Mai Chau breaks up the effort partway through.

A support van follows the route throughout, so you can hop off and ride along if a stage gets too much, and English-speaking cycling guides are with you for the whole trip.

What you'll do

  • Ride pass roads through mountains up to 3,000m high
  • Cycle through dense rainforest in the northern border region
  • Cover 683km across five stages over the week
  • Rest and recover in Mai Chau
  • Tackle over 11,000m of total ascent
Good to know
  • Demanding trip — stages range from 45km to 126km with serious daily climbing
  • A support van is on hand if you need a break from riding
  • Bike rental and a team jersey are included
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're a fit cyclist seeking raw Vietnamese landscapes and excellent guides. Think twice if you need reliable logistics, clear pre-trip communication, or guaranteed accommodation standards.

  • Local guides are genuinely knowledgeable and passionate, taking you to authentic villages with real Vietnamese culture.
  • Communication from the operator is poor and minimal; expect surprises like shared train cabins and late hotel check-ins without warning.
  • Itinerary isn't robust to weather; expect 16-hour car days and missed meals if ferries close due to low water levels.
  • You'll spend most time on roads in a mountain bike, not technical trails; requires fair fitness but isn't demanding cycling.
