About this trip
This is a self-guided drive through Ireland's Ancient East, tracing the country's history from Neolithic tombs to Viking towns to medieval castles, at your own pace and in your own time.
You start in Dublin among the castle, cathedral and Trinity College, then head out each day to a new corner of the southeast — the Boyne Valley's ancient monuments, the monastic valley of Glendalough, Waterford's Viking quarter, the Rock of Cashel, and Kilkenny's medieval streets — before looping back to Dublin.
It's private and easy-paced, so there's no group to keep up with, just a route to follow and enough time built in to actually stop and look.
What you'll do
- Explore Dublin Castle, St. Patrick's Cathedral and Trinity College
- Visit the 3200 BC passage tombs of Newgrange and Knowth in the Boyne Valley
- Walk the monastic site at Glendalough in its glacial valley
- Learn the emigration story aboard the Dunbrody Famine Ship in New Ross
- See the Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny's medieval quarter
- Stop at the Brownshill Dolmen in County Carlow on the way back to Dublin
- Self-guided and private — you travel independently, following a set route rather than joining a group
- Easy pace, but you cover a lot of ground across the southeast each day
- Suits travellers who want structure and history without a fixed group schedule
