Upper Mustang Photography Tour 12 Days 2026/2027

Start & end in Kathmandu 12 days Up to 10

About this trip

This is a photography-led journey through Upper Mustang, the high desert region of Nepal that borders Tibet. You travel through barren, wind-carved cliffs and canyons that shift colour through the day, a landscape shaped as much by Tibetan Buddhist culture as by geology.

The trip opens in Kathmandu among its Hindu and Buddhist monuments, then moves to Pokhara before you fly into Jomsom and head north on foot and by vehicle through Kagbeni, Chusang and Dhakmar to the walled former kingdom of Lo-Manthang.

Along the way there's ample time to shoot dramatic light on the cliffs, traditional farm villages strung with prayer flags, and the old fort palace and monasteries of Lo-Manthang, before returning via Jomsom and Pokhara to Kathmandu.

What you'll do

  • Explore Kathmandu's Hindu and Buddhist monuments and old palace courtyards
  • Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom along the historic Trans-Himalayan salt trade route
  • Travel through the villages of Kagbeni, Chusang and Dhakmar
  • Explore the walled city of Lo-Manthang and its former royal fort palace
  • Visit old monasteries around Upper Mustang
  • Take in Annapurna views and lakeside scenery in Pokhara
Good to know
  • This is a remote, high-altitude region with cold mornings and nights, especially outside the March to May and October to November windows
  • Expect a mix of driving, walking and a short scenic flight rather than long daily treks
  • Best visited March to May or October to November for clear mountain views, though the rain-shadow effect keeps it viable through summer too
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want dramatic canyon landscapes and professional local guides. Think twice if you need guaranteed group dynamics or prefer trekking over vehicle-based touring.

  • Guide Dip and the Eco Holidays team consistently praised for professional service and genuine photography tips throughout.
  • Jeep access to Upper Mustang is apparently rare; this operator seems the only option for vehicle-based touring there.
  • Groups can shrink last-minute; one traveller ended up solo despite booking expecting four people on the same dates.
  • Tibetan-speaking guide recommended for this region to better understand local culture and religious context during visits.
