Jordan & Egypt Express

Amman → Memphis 13 days Up to 18

About this trip

Thirteen days across two countries, tracing some of the most storied ancient sites in the Middle East. You start in Jordan, working south from Amman through Roman ruins, the King's Highway and Petra, before crossing into Egypt for the pyramids, the Nile and Luxor's temples.

It's partially guided, so there are guided walks and included visits alongside stretches of free time to explore at your own pace, whether that's wandering Petra's back trails or choosing your own evening in Amman or Luxor. A night in a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum and a slow afternoon sailing the Nile on a felucca give the trip a change of rhythm from temple to temple.

The Jordan and Egypt legs are linked by a flight (not included) and an overnight train, so there's a fair amount of ground covered — this suits people who want breadth over lingering in one place.

What you'll do

  • Walk the Siq canyon to Petra's Treasury, then explore further sites like the Monastery at your own pace
  • Sleep in a Bedouin camp under the stars in Wadi Rum, with a jeep safari through the desert the next morning
  • Float in the Dead Sea and, if the timing's right, try the optional trek through Wadi Mujib canyon
  • See the Great Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza with an Egyptologist guide
  • Sail the Nile on a traditional felucca, sleeping on deck with a Nubian crew cooking and sailing
  • Explore Luxor's West Bank, including the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Queen Hatshepsut
Good to know
  • Partially guided — expect a mix of guided visits and free time to explore sites yourself
  • Some basic, characterful nights included, such as sleeping on deck on the felucca (a hotel upgrade is possible)
  • Several of the standout experiences — Petra by Night, Abu Simbel, the Luxor hot air balloon — are optional extras, not included as standard
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want curated access to iconic sites with generally strong guides. Think twice if you're budget-conscious, need dietary flexibility, or dislike early starts and long travel days.

  • Petra demands a full day; guides sometimes underestimate this and swap it for lesser ruins instead.
  • Cairo-Luxor overland is 10 hours each way with minimal stops; flight is worth the extra cost.
  • Final Cairo hotel (Zayed) was cramped, poor wifi, non-functional showers; prior Cairo hotel also had weak signal.
  • Vegans and vegetarians will struggle with meal options; meat and gluten dominate across the tour.
