About this trip
Twelve days across Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands, built around the landscapes rather than the beach loungers. Expect rice paddies, volcano slopes, and a good deal of sweat between the swims.
You raft grade 2 and 3 rapids near Ubud, cycle down from the hills of Candidasa to the coast, and climb to Lempuyang Temple along the flanks of Mount Agung. Later the trip pushes further, into the forests and crater trails of Mount Rinjani before winding down with snorkelling off the Gili Islands.
There's cultural texture too — Hindu temples, traditional blacksmithing, and time spent in villages getting a feel for everyday Balinese life. This is a trip for people who'd rather earn their beach time than start with it.
What you'll do
- White water raft grade 2 and 3 rapids outside Ubud
- Cycle roughly 31 km from Candidasa's hills down to the coast
- Climb the temple route up Mount Agung to Lempuyang
- Trek through monkey-filled forest to the Mount Rinjani crater
- Snorkel for sea turtles off the Gili Islands
- Visit Hindu temples and a traditional blacksmith
- A good fitness level matters — the rafting, cycling and especially the Rinjani hike are physically demanding
- The Rinjani trek involves a 2000 m ascent over 9 km each way, with steep, dusty sections and cold nights — you'll need sturdy shoes and warm clothing, though porters carry the camping gear
- You should be a confident swimmer for both the rafting and the Gili Islands snorkelling
Worth it if you want authentic local experiences and a standout guide. Think twice if you expect high-intensity activities or larger group sizes.
- Guide Andy consistently transforms the trip through local knowledge, cultural insight, and problem-solving like seamless last-minute hotel changes.
- Snorkelling and scuba diving at Gili T delivers genuinely memorable experiences; visits to traditional Balinese families feel off-the-beaten-path and authentic.
- Biking and some hiking are quite laid-back rather than active; alternative hike felt repetitive compared to Candidasa, and small group sizes affected group dynamic.
- Trip misses Mount Rinjani hike (understandable substitution offered) and accommodation quality varies enough that some reviewers scored activities higher than overall experience.
