Rome to Southern Italy: Amalfi & Puglia

Rome → Bari 17 days Up to 12

About this trip

Seventeen days travelling from Rome down through the south of Italy, mixing famous ancient sites with countryside that most visitors never see. You'll have a local guide throughout, moving mainly by train between Rome, the Amalfi coast and Puglia.

Expect ruins and history — Pompeii, Lecce, the Sassi dwellings in Matera — alongside stretches of villas, vineyards and rolling hills. Plenty of free time is built in, so you can set your own pace for exploring, eating and drinking.

This is an easy-paced, fully guided trip with private rooms, suited to those who want the big historical names without a rigid schedule.

What you'll do

  • Explore the streets of Rome
  • Walk the ruins of Pompeii
  • Wander the historic centre of Lecce
  • See the Sassi cave dwellings in Matera
  • Pass through countryside villas and vineyards on route south
  • Free time to eat, drink and explore at your own pace
Good to know
  • Travel is mostly by train, so pack light — you'll need to lift your own luggage onto racks and manage stairs and cobbled streets
  • Summer temperatures in the south can pass 40°C, and July to mid-September is high season with busy towns and stretched infrastructure
  • European hotel rooms tend to be compact, often with two single beds pushed together rather than a double
