Vic Falls to Stone Town

Victoria Falls → Stonetown 17 days Up to 22

About this trip

This is a 17-day overland journey from Victoria Falls through Zambia and Malawi into Tanzania, ending in Stone Town. You'll cross four countries by purpose-built overland vehicle, camping as you go and getting properly off the main tourist routes.

Wildlife is a big part of it — three national parks including Lower Zambezi and the less-visited Mikumi, with 4WD safaris to spot lions, giraffes, hippos and buffalo. You'll also meet local women in South Luangwa who turn poachers' snares into jewellery, and visit a tea farm to see how the leaf goes from bush to cup.

This is participatory camping, not a fixed-base holiday. You'll pitch your own tent, help with camp chores, and some days will start very early to beat traffic or catch the best safari light. Expect the schedule to shift with weather and road conditions rather than run to the minute.

What you'll do

  • 4WD safaris through Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa and Mikumi National Parks
  • Meet local women turning poachers' snares into jewellery in South Luangwa
  • See Victoria Falls up close
  • Visit a working tea farm from planting through to harvest
  • Overland travel across Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania to Stone Town
Good to know
  • Participatory overland camping — you pitch your own tent and help with camp chores
  • Some days involve early starts for safari or long drives, and roughing it with no facilities in the bush
  • Travel and activity times can shift with weather and road conditions, so flexibility helps
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're after genuine wildlife encounters and don't mind long, rough overland days. Think twice if you expect all activities included or quick, comfortable travel.

  • Guide quality is genuinely exceptional; Momba, John, Francis and Laban brought Africa's history, politics and culture to life convincingly.
  • Expect very long drives on bad dirt roads with traffic jams; most days involve travel rather than game drives or activities.
  • Victoria Falls activities and Devil's Pool aren't included; you'll pay extra for what brochures might imply are part of the package.
  • Wildlife encounters are genuinely close and memorable; good value compared to competitor safaris at roughly a third of their price.
