About this trip
Fourteen days across Japan's classic Golden Route, moving from Tokyo through the mountains to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka. It's a full sweep of the country's best-known sights, paced so you get guided time at the key spots and free time to wander on your own.
You start in Tokyo with temples, gardens and market food, then head out to Mount Fuji and the mountain towns before settling into Kyoto's temples and shrines. From there it's on to Hiroshima, Miyajima and a final stretch in Osaka.
With 13 nights in hotels and a mix of guided visits and independent time, it suits people who want to see the highlights without missing out on some flexibility.
What you'll do
- Wander the Imperial Palace Gardens and Senso-ji Temple in Tokyo
- Take in the view from Mount Fuji's 5th Station
- Visit Nikko's Toshogu Shrine and Kegon Falls, then the villages of Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa
- See Kyoto's Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Golden Pavilion and Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine
- Meet the deer of Nara Park
- Explore Hiroshima, Miyajima and Osaka Castle
- Partially guided — a mix of led visits and free time to explore on your own
- Easy pace, suited to families and mixed-ability groups
- Covers a lot of ground, so expect regular travel days between regions
Worth it if you want a curated itinerary and guides without planning. Think twice if you're budget-conscious or expect full daily structure — five days have no activities, and you'll likely add £500+ in extras.
- Five of fourteen days have zero scheduled activities; feels like nine days of touring packed into a two-week price tag.
- Tokyo, Kanazawa, and Osaka hotels are small and basic; only Kyoto accommodation justifies the cost of the package.
- Meet points and hotel names not provided in Japanese; cabbies won't understand, making navigation frustrating without guides.
- Most guides are knowledgeable and friendly; Kyoto's public bath and destinations themselves genuinely impressive and beautiful.
