North Spain Discovery

Barcelona → Madrid 8 days Up to 12

About this trip

This eight-day route moves through northern Spain by train and public bus, giving you time to watch the scenery change while someone else handles the driving. It's built around food, wine and old towns rather than ticking off monuments at speed.

You'll sip rioja in Logrono, work through plates of pintxos in San Sebastian, and explore the medieval streets of Pamplona. The trip also takes in the seaside town of Barcelona and finishes with the Art Walk and museums of Madrid.

It's a fully guided group trip with an easy pace, well suited to a first look at this part of Spain.

What you'll do

  • Taste rioja wine in Logrono
  • Try pintxos, the Basque take on tapas, in San Sebastian
  • Wander the medieval streets of Pamplona
  • Visit the seaside town of Barcelona
  • Walk Madrid's Art Walk and explore its historic museums
Good to know
  • Mostly public transport (trains and buses), so pack light enough to lift into storage racks and carry over cobblestones and stairs
  • Summers here can hit over 40C, and many hotels have fans rather than air conditioning, so plan for the heat
  • Hotel rooms in Europe tend to be small and central rather than spacious, and twin travellers may get two singles pushed together rather than a double
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want excellent food, reliable guides, and balance between group time and independence. Think twice if you need more than a night in Barcelona or Madrid, or dislike long coach journeys.

  • Guides consistently praised for being knowledgeable, organised, and genuinely helpful with logistics and restaurant selection.
  • Strong balance of group activities and solo exploration time; you're not shepherded constantly but have support when needed.
  • Four-plus hour coach journey from Logrono to Madrid is brutal; Barcelona and Madrid feel rushed with just one night each.
  • Hotels in Barcelona and Madrid disappointed; Logrono has two nights when one would suffice; book extra pre/post nights yourself.
