About this trip
Nine days moving through Japan's mix of neon-lit cities, quiet countryside and deep history, from Tokyo to Osaka.
You start in the bustle of Tokyo, then head out to a rural homestay for home-cooked meals and views of Mt Fuji, before the bullet train carries you on to Kyoto, Hiroshima and finally Osaka.
This is a trip built on contrast — big city energy one day, tea farms or vegetable gardens the next — held together by public transport and a fair amount of walking.
What you'll do
- Explore Tokyo's neighbourhoods and street life
- Homestay in the countryside with home-cooked meals, either near Kawane's tea farms or Gotemba's vegetable gardens
- Views of Mt Fuji
- Bullet train to Kyoto and Hiroshima
- Time in Osaka, known for its food scene
- Fast-paced and on foot — you'll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day walking and carrying your own luggage through busy train stations
- Double rooms in Japan tend to be small (around 20 sqm), and a twin may be substituted during busy periods
- The countryside homestay varies by departure — some groups visit a tea farm in Kawane, others help pick vegetables for dinner in Gotemba
