This 25-day trip runs through Peru and Bolivia, taking in the Amazon rainforest, Lake Titicaca, La Paz and the Uyuni salt flats, with the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu at its heart.

Expect a mix of high-altitude landscapes, jungle, desert and mountain, alongside time in local markets and simple meals shared with people along the way.

It's a demanding route in places, with serious trekking, long 4WD crossings and basic camping, balanced by the reward of reaching the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu.

  • A good level of fitness is needed — the Inca Trail and Quarry Trail involve strenuous hiking, and there's a lot of walking overall
  • Trekkers camp with basic facilities, and the Uyuni leg involves long 4WD journeys, cold nights, dormitory-style stays and simple meals
