About this trip
Twenty-six days across India, moving from Delhi's bird sanctuary to the Himalayan hill stations, then into tiger country, and finally south to elephant and bird territory before ending on Kerala's backwaters. It's a proper cross-country wildlife circuit rather than a single-park focus.
You'll track Royal Bengal tigers in Kanha and Bandhavgarh, watch elephants in Kabini, and spot deer and bison in Bandipur, with high-altitude bird species around Shimla and Manali along the way. The trip closes gently in Kumarakom, where migratory birds gather on the backwaters.
Guides with local knowledge of flora and fauna lead throughout, and accommodation leans into traditional Indian architecture rather than generic hotels.
What you'll do
- Spot birdlife at Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary near Delhi
- Look for high-altitude species around Shimla and Manali
- Track Royal Bengal tigers in Kanha and Bandhavgarh National Parks
- See elephants in Kabini and deer and bison in Bandipur
- End the trip on Kumarakom's backwaters watching migratory birds
- A long trip covering very different terrain — from Himalayan hill stations to southern backwaters — so expect a fair amount of travel between stops
- Bring binoculars, as much of the wildlife viewing is at a distance
- Suits those who want a broad wildlife overview of India rather than deep time in one park
Worth it if you're flexible with logistics and accept variable guide quality. Think twice if you need guaranteed tiger sightings or Western food.
- Dedicated car and driver throughout makes navigating chaotic Indian roads manageable and comfortable.
- Ranthambore safari zone allocation matters hugely: zones 7 and 8 are tiger-sparse; lower zones deliver sightings.
- Hotel bookings changed last-minute causing logistical problems; Kolkata lacked a proper guide unlike Agra and Jaipur.
- Elephant safari at Kaziranga and Taj Mahal viewing genuinely unforgettable; tiger sightings (9 total) and rare sloth bear seen.
