About this trip
Ten days across Bulgaria, tracing the country's layered history from Thracian tombs and Roman ruins to medieval fortresses and Ottoman-era towns. The route runs from Sofia through Plovdiv, the Valley of Roses, Veliko Tarnovo, and the Black Sea coast, ending in the wine town of Melnik.
This is a private, fully guided trip at an easy pace, built for those who want the history explained properly rather than rushed past. Expect museum towns, old fortresses, and a fair bit of local wine and food along the way.
The landscape shifts as much as the history does, from green valleys and mountain passes to golden Black Sea beaches and sandstone hills around Melnik.
What you'll do
- Explore Roman remains and old town streets in Plovdiv
- Visit the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak in the Valley of Roses
- Walk the medieval Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo
- Wander the UNESCO old towns of Nessebar and Varna's seafront
- Taste local wine in the sandstone hill town of Melnik
- Private and fully guided throughout, so the pace can flex to suit you
- Rated easy, but you cover a lot of ground with a new town most days
Worth it if you're a history buff who values knowledgeable guides and don't mind occasional hotel inconsistencies. Think twice if you have mobility issues or want famous tourist hotspots.
- Guides (Tsveto, Stan) were genuinely knowledgeable, passionate, and handled every situation competently.
- Comfortable vehicles, reasonable drive lengths, and well-paced itinerary suited history lovers perfectly.
- Some four-star hotels inconsistent: one lacked lifts, another served poor breakfasts and had untrained staff.
- Bulgaria has cobblestones and no ramps; challenging for mobility issues. Wine tastings frequent; may be excessive for some.
