About this trip
An 11-day route through the Balkans, starting in Sofia and finishing in Bucharest, taking in six countries along the way. You'll move between capital cities and smaller towns, with a good mix of history, landmarks and landscape rather than one single focus.
The route runs Sofia to Skopje, Tirana, Ohrid, Bitola, Meteora, Thessaloniki, back to Sofia, then on to Bucharest. An optional extension into Transylvania adds Bran Castle, Brasov and Peles Castle for those who want to keep going.
Groups are small, and guests may join or leave the tour at different points along the route, so who you're travelling with can shift over the 11 days.
What you'll do
- Explore Sofia's landmarks at the start of the trip
- Visit Skopje and Tirana
- Take in Ohrid and Bitola
- See the Meteora monasteries
- Spend time in Thessaloniki before heading back to Sofia
- Optional Transylvania add-on with Bran Castle, Brasov and Peles Castle
- This is a multi-country route, so expect differences in comfort standards, road conditions and language support as you cross borders
- Some group members may join or depart partway through, so your travel companions can change along the way
- The Transylvania extension (Bran Castle, Brasov, Peles Castle) is optional and separate from the core route
Worth it if you get Igor as your guide and don't mind chasing the operator for basic trip details. Think twice if communication and guide consistency matter to you.
- Operator provides scant upfront info; hotel names, guide names, transfer logistics often withheld until you ask.
- Igor is genuinely exceptional—deeply knowledgeable, proud of Macedonia, and goes well beyond expectations.
- Guide quality is wildly inconsistent; reviewers had starkly different experiences with the same tour operator.
- Small group dynamic depends heavily on which guide you're paired with for eleven days.
