Atlas Mountain Trek: Valleys, Villages & Berber Trails”

Start & end in Marrakesh 3 days Up to 15

About this trip

Three days walking through the High Atlas on trails that link remote valleys with the Berber villages that have always used them. It's a moderate trek — proper mountain passes and long days on your feet, but paced for cultural immersion rather than summit-bagging.

You start in Imlil and climb over Tizi Mzik Pass before dropping to Tamsoulte Waterfall and the village of Tizi Oussem for your first night. Day two crosses another pass into the Azzaden Valley, threading through villages like Aït Aïssa and Matat. The final day is a gentler forest walk back to Imlil, with stops for tea in local homes along the way.

Local guides lead throughout, and mules can carry gear if you'd rather walk unencumbered. It suits hikers who want the mountains and the villages in equal measure, not just the views.

What you'll do

  • Cross Tizi Mzik Pass at 2,480m from Imlil
  • See Tamsoulte Waterfall, the highest in the Atlas
  • Overnight in the village of Tizi Oussem, with the option of a hammam
  • Climb Tizi Oudid Pass for views over the Azzaden Valley
  • Pass through Berber villages including Aït Aïssa and Matat
  • Walk juniper and pine forest trails from Matat back to Imlil, stopping for tea with local families
Good to know
  • Moderate trekking with two mountain passes over 2,000m — some fitness required
  • Overnight stops are in village accommodation, not hotels
  • Optional mule support is available if you'd rather not carry your own pack
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want a properly guided, food-focused trek with attentive guides. Think twice if transport logistics and upfront clarity matter to you.

  • Guides Omar Ait Tadrart and Omar Ait Elmeden are genuinely knowledgeable, English-speaking, and actively assist struggling walkers up steep sections.
  • Food is freshly prepared daily; lunches in the mountains include hot mint tea and fresh juice; evening meals back at accommodation described as top quality.
  • Transport from Marrakech to trailhead not included; arranging it separately costs around 120 euros return for four people, which feels expensive for Morocco.
  • Communication about exact starting point logistics was difficult; expect to sort transport independently rather than having it clearly pre-arranged.
