About this trip
Four days out of Cairo to Siwa, the oasis town tucked into Egypt's western desert near the Libyan border. It's a long haul to get there — around 748km, roughly 8 hours on the road — with a stop at El Alamein on the way.
Once in Siwa the pace shifts to exploring on foot and by 4x4: old mudbrick ruins, natural springs, salt lakes and the dunes of the Great Sand Sea. A private guide travels with you throughout, so it's a personal, unhurried way to see a part of Egypt most tourists don't reach.
Good for families or small groups wanting something away from the usual Nile and pyramids route, with comfort built in rather than a hardcore expedition feel.
What you'll do

- Ride 4x4 vehicles into the dunes of the Great Sand Sea

- Long drive days — Cairo to Siwa is about 8 hours each way
- Private guide throughout, so the itinerary can flex to suit your pace
- Rated easy, suited to families and mixed-ability groups
Worth it if you value desert landscapes, knowledgeable local guides, and feel safe with experienced drivers. Think twice if you need reliable itinerary communication, daily room cleaning, or modern bathroom standards.
- Drivers and local guides genuinely knowledgeable, kind, and attentive; solo female travellers report feeling well looked after throughout.
- Itinerary changes communicated same morning; guides sometimes unfamiliar with full route, skipping listed sites or showing only one tomb instead of four.
- Hotel rooms small, bathrooms run-down with rust and cold water only; no daily cleaning despite eco-lodge status being presented as acceptable.
- Driver communication varies; some speak no English, requiring Google Translate; extra requests sometimes quoted at inflated rates like 100 USD for nearby sites.
