About this trip
This eight-day ride takes you down the Portuguese coast from Porto to Lisbon, self-guided and at your own pace, with the route mapped out and your bags moved for you between stops.
You start in Porto, threading past Port wine cellars before following the coastline south, through pine and eucalyptus woods, salt pans and dunes, to fishing towns that still run on the day's catch.
It ends in Lisbon, arriving by bike into a city of tiled façades and steep hills, with a fair bit of medieval and Baroque architecture to take in along the way.
What you'll do
- Explore Porto's UNESCO-listed old town and learn about Port wine
- Cycle the coast through pine and eucalyptus forest
- Ride through the protected São Jacinto Dunes Natural Park
- Wander the canals and salt pans of Aveiro
- See the beaches of Nazaré and the walled medieval town of Óbidos
- Arrive by bike in Lisbon
- Self-guided and private, so you set your own pace each day
- Rated easy, suited to riders who want a relaxed pace rather than a physical challenge
- Airport transfers and accommodation in coastal towns are arranged as part of the trip
Worth it if you're a confident cyclist happy to navigate independently with solid logistical backup. Think twice if you need daily guided riding or rely entirely on your bike for the full itinerary.
- Tour operator genuinely goes above and beyond; coordinator personally retrieved lost luggage and rerouted it to your hotel.
- Hotels consistently excellent, centrally located, walking distance to restaurants with pre-provided dining suggestions included.
- Admin glitches caused confusion at transfers: wrong operator name on documents, driver and client didn't recognise each other initially.
- Portugal's terrain is hilly; gravel bikes standard, not top-tier carbon models; December offers fewer crowds but chilly evenings.
