About this trip
Fifteen days across all five Central Asian 'Stans' — Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan — following stretches of the old Silk Road through desert, mountain and city.
You'll move between the marble architecture of Ashgabat, the blue-tiled mosques and madrasas of Samarkand, mountain lakes in Kyrgyzstan and canyon landscapes in Kazakhstan, with plenty of local food and hospitality along the way.
It's a broad sweep of the region rather than a deep dive into any one country, suited to those who want an overview of what Central Asia offers in a single trip.
What you'll do
- See the Darvaza gas crater burning in the Turkmen desert
- Walk the white-marble boulevards of Ashgabat
- Visit the blue-domed monuments of Samarkand
- Explore mountain lakes in Kyrgyzstan
- See the canyon landscapes of Kazakhstan
- Take in several UNESCO World Heritage Sites along the route
- Covers five countries in 15 days, so it's a fast-moving itinerary with a lot of ground covered
- Partially guided, so some sections you'll navigate with more independence
- Rated easy, suited to a range of ages and fitness levels, including families
Worth it if you value seamless logistics and standout guides across diverse landscapes. Think twice if you need comfort on long drives or deep political context.
- Local guides like Merdan and Aidana genuinely went above and beyond—visa fixes, ankle check-ins, real care.
- Uzbekistan guide had poor English, showed up late daily, and skipped bazaar visits; felt rushed and underexplained.
- Long overland border crossings (Farap: 1.5 hours walking, multiple checks) and cramped vehicles on extended journeys were exhausting.
- Turkmenistan's Gates of Hell disappointing relative to horrendous car ride; Merv felt skippable and uncomfortable to reach.
