About this trip
Four days from Windhoek out to the Skeleton Coast and into the heart of the Namib, staying in accommodated lodges rather than camping along the way.
You get time in Swakopmund to do as much or as little as you fancy, then head south across gravel plains and over the Tropic of Capricorn into dune country. A pre-dawn start gets you to Deadvlei and Sossusvlei while the light is still soft, with a chance to climb one of the big dunes if you're up for it.
The route also takes in the wetlands at Walvis Bay and a stop at Solitaire before the drive back over the Khomas Hochland mountains to Windhoek.
What you'll do
- Free time in Swakopmund on the Skeleton Coast to relax or find some thrills
- Visit the Ramsar-listed wetlands at Walvis Bay
- Cross the Tropic of Capricorn en route to the Namib's dune fields
- Pre-dawn drive to see Deadvlei's skeleton trees and Sossusvlei
- Climb Dune 45 or Big Daddy for views over the desert
- Stop at Solitaire on the return leg to Windhoek
- Accommodated trip, not camping
- Involves a pre-dawn start for the Deadvlei and Sossusvlei visit
- Swakopmund is free time, so the pace there is up to you
Worth it if you want guides who cook, drive and genuinely engage with you across stunning desert landscape. Think twice if unmade roads and bus speaker quality bother you.
- Guides double as cooks and deliver proper meals throughout; Gideon and Abraham particularly praised for humour and knowledge.
- Free airport transfers, three different accommodations included, and Desert Camp near Sossusvlei is genuinely excellent value.
- Unmade roads dominate the route and create genuine discomfort; bus microphone speakers inadequate for guide commentary whilst driving.
- Four days is tight to absorb everything; Big Daddy dune climb is physically demanding but rewarding.
