About this trip
An 11-day route across Tunisia for anyone curious to see beyond the coast, moving from the capital down through the interior and back up again. You start in Tunis with the ruins of Carthage and the old medina, then head west to the Roman site of Dougga before dropping south.
The middle stretch is the most varied: the holy city of Kairouan, the mountain oases around Tozeur, a crossing of Chott Djerid (the largest salt lake in northern Africa) and a night under canvas in the desert. From there you loop through Berber and troglodyte villages before heading back north via Mahdia and Sousse.
It's a full circuit of the country rather than a single-base holiday, suited to families and groups who want to see how the coast, the desert and the interior differ from each other.
