About this trip
The Pantanal gets a fraction of the attention the Amazon does, but it's where you'll actually see Brazil's wildlife. This trip is based in Mato Grosso, using Cuiabá as a hub to reach three distinct landscapes within a few hours' drive.
You'll spend time in the wetlands south of the city, the rocky plateaus of Chapada dos Guimarães, and the little-visited Bom Jardim area near Nobres. Between them you're covering a huge range of habitat, from the world's largest flooded grassland to dry highland scenery.
The Pantanal itself is enormous and dense with life, birds, fish, mammals and reptiles all concentrated in a way few other places manage. What you see depends on when you go, and the trip works differently depending on the season.
What you'll do
- Explore the wetlands roughly 100km south of Cuiabá
- Visit the highlands of Chapada dos Guimarães
- Discover the lesser-known Bom Jardim area near Nobres
- Spot wildlife across birds, mammals, reptiles and fish
- Travel between three distinct Mato Grosso ecosystems in one trip
- Dry season (June-October) gives the best wildlife viewing, as animals gather around shrinking waterholes
- Wet season (November-March) floods much of the Pantanal, limiting access mostly to boat or plane but showing the landscape at its most lush
- Private rooms throughout, suited to families and small groups
