About this trip
This 14-day trip, designed by South Africans, takes you across the country from Cape Town's coastline to the wildlife-rich north, covering a lot of ground and a lot of contrasts along the way.
You'll follow the Garden Route and Route 62 through mountains and semi-desert, then head up to Kruger National Park for game drives before finishing in Johannesburg.
It's a broad introduction to South Africa's landscapes, history and wildlife rather than a slow-paced regional deep-dive.
What you'll do
- Visit Cape Point at the southwestern tip of Africa
- Drive the Garden Route and Route 62
- Cross the semi-desert landscape of the Great Karoo
- Go on wildlife drives in the Kruger National Park region
- Take in the views along the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga
- Finish the trip in Johannesburg
- Covers a lot of distance in 14 days, so expect regular travel days between stops
- Fully guided throughout, with a group format suited to families and first-time visitors to South Africa
Worth it if you want to see a lot of South Africa and connect with a strong guide. Think twice if you need reliability on pre-tour admin or prefer a relaxed pace.
- Tour guides (Willem, Matt) genuinely exceptional: energetic, safety-focused, kept long journeys entertaining and bonded groups well.
- Expat Explore's pre-tour admin poor: wrong information sent, excursion details incorrect, unclear what's actually included versus paid extras.
- Early starts exhausting; damp conditions on walks strain knees and injuries; optional excursions cancelled without notice due to weather or safety.
- Bring cash for excursions (large sums unsafe, collected irregularly); some hotels don't cater for dietary needs; book direct, not via third parties.
