About this trip
Thirteen days across Nicaragua's lakes, volcanoes and colonial towns, moving from the crater trails of Mombacho to the cloud forest of Selva Negra and the laid-back island of Ometepe. This is a small-group trip that mixes hiking and wildlife spotting with the country's revolutionary history and old Spanish streets.
You'll cross Lake Nicaragua by boat, walk coffee plantations, and spend time in both Granada and Leon, two cities with very different characters but a shared sense of history. It's a trip built around landscapes as much as towns.
What you'll do
- Hike the crater trail of the dormant Mombacho Volcano for views over Lake Nicaragua and Granada
- Spot wildlife in the cloud forest of Selva Negra
- Visit a coffee plantation in Selva Negra
- Cross Lake Nicaragua to the volcanic island of Ometepe
- Explore the colonial streets and revolutionary history of Granada and Leon
- Moderate pace with hiking involved, including a volcano crater trail
- Private rooms throughout, so no shared dorms
- Covers both natural landscapes and historic town exploring, so expect a mix of activity levels
Worth it if you want genuine cultural immersion with a standout guide. Think twice if you're particular about hotel standards.
- Guide Rene transforms the trip—locals rave he's among the best they've encountered on dozens of escorted tours worldwide.
- Specific highlights consistently mentioned: Masaya volcano at night, turtle release, Ometepe Island, Granada's self-paced exploration, and wildlife spotting.
- A couple of hotels fall short of standard—worth clarifying accommodation quality before booking.
- Homestays and farm visits included; genuine cultural access rather than typical resort experience.
