Amazon to Andes with Machu Picchu by Train

Start & end in Lima 12 days Up to 16

About this trip

Twelve days that split neatly in two: a few days deep in the Amazon followed by a shift up into the Andes and on to Machu Picchu. You get the humid, green world of the rainforest and the thin, bright air of the mountains in one trip.

In the jungle you're based at an intimate lodge, moving out from there to spot monkeys and macaws along the canopy. Then it's onward by train through the valleys towards Machu Picchu, following the same route the Incas once walked.

Alongside the big sights there's room for the everyday texture of Peru — meals that lean into local ingredients, conversations with artisans, and ruins that get properly explained rather than just photographed.

What you'll do

  • Stay at an intimate lodge in the Amazon watching for monkeys and macaws
  • Take the scenic train up through the Andes towards Machu Picchu
  • Walk the ruins of Machu Picchu itself
  • Explore Inca and other historical sites en route
  • Meet local artisans and try regional Peruvian cooking
Good to know
  • Covers two very different environments — humid lowland jungle and high-altitude mountains — so pack and pace yourself for both
  • Involves some altitude adjustment given the Andes leg
  • Suits travellers who want wildlife and history in the same trip rather than just one or the other
