About this trip
Nine days in Peru built around the classic four-day Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu, taking in the region's archaeological sites and history along the way.
You retrace the original Inca route on foot, climbing through cloud forest and past ruins before reaching Machu Picchu itself. The trip ends with a flight back to Lima rather than an overland return.
This one is run with their own trekking crews, so you're walking with porters who are fairly treated and using equipment they control the quality of.
What you'll do
- Trek the four-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
- Pass Inca ruins and cloud forest scenery en route
- Reach Machu Picchu on foot via the original route
- Explore the archaeological and cultural sites of the region
- Fly back to Lima at the end of the trip
- The Inca Trail trek is four days of hiking, so a reasonable level of fitness helps
- Treks are run in-house, which the operator says means fair treatment of porters and better equipment
Worth it if you're fit enough for a genuinely brutal hike and value exceptional staff treatment. Think twice if you're not comfortable with early starts and steep terrain.
- Guides Enrique, Miguel and Cesar were inspirational leaders who felt like friends, not just tour operators.
- Porters and chefs Florentino and Meliton delivered camp food quality that shocked travellers in a good way.
- The hike is brutally physical; older travellers needed constant assistant guide support to avoid being left behind.
- Lima portion felt less essential than Cusco and the Inca Trail itself to most travellers.
