The Best of Costa Rica (Activities included & Superior hotels)

Start & end in San Jose 13 days Up to 50

About this trip

Thirteen days across Costa Rica, moving from rainforest canals to Caribbean coast to volcano country and cloud forest, finishing on the Pacific side. It's a wide loop that takes in most of what the country is known for, with activities included along the way and superior hotels each night.

You start in Tortuguero, reached only by boat through a network of jungle canals, then head to the South Caribbean coast for a slower, laid-back stretch. From there the pace picks up with white water rafting on the Pacuare River, before you move on to the Arenal Volcano region and the mist and canopy of Monteverde. The trip ends at Manuel Antonio, where national park forest runs straight down to the beach.

This is a partially guided trip, so some sections are led and others give you room to explore on your own.

What you'll do

  • Travel the jungle canals of Tortuguero to spot wildlife
  • Unwind on the South Caribbean coast
  • White water raft the Pacuare River
  • Explore the Arenal Volcano area
  • Walk through Monteverde Cloud Forest
  • Finish at Manuel Antonio National Park, where forest meets beach
Good to know
  • Partially guided, so expect a mix of led activities and free time
  • Covers a lot of ground in 13 days, from the Caribbean to the Pacific side
  • Runs over Christmas and New Year
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want to see most of Costa Rica in two weeks with guides and logistics sorted. Think twice if you're after relaxation or hate early starts and long travel days.

  • Guides consistently brilliant and informative; seeing wildlife with experts beats solo park visits entirely.
  • Two nights per location means frantic pacing and long transfer days; last day to San Jose took six hours with traffic.
  • Itinerary descriptions inaccurate: La Fortuna waterfall is 500 steps not 300; volcano walk steep, not mostly flat.
  • Saranda boutique hotel cabins cramped for two people; Manuel Antonio park visit shortened by closure; some hotel restaurants poor value.
