About this trip
Six days in Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands built around the Goroka Show, one of the largest gatherings of tribal groups anywhere, held over the three-day weekend nearest Independence Day on September 16th. Over 100 groups converge in a single field, each in their own paint, feathers and dress, to sing, dance and perform for a crowd of tens of thousands.
Before the main event, you get a day with the Asaro Mudmen, a separate visit run since 2013, learning about their history and watching demonstrations that go beyond the brief festival appearance most visitors see.
Based at the Bird of Paradise Hotel throughout, with a private, personalised structure — this is your own trip, at your own pace, not a fixed group tour.
What you'll do
- Attend the Goroka Eastern Highlands Cultural Festival, known locally as a Sing-Sing
- Spend a dedicated day with the Asaro Mudmen learning their history and watching performances
- Walk the festival field among 100+ performing groups in full traditional dress
- Photograph and film dancing, singing and costume up close
- Stay based at the Bird of Paradise Hotel in Goroka for the duration
- Timed to the three-day weekend closest to September 16th Independence Day, so dates are fixed to the festival calendar
- Private and personalised — suits those who want their own arrangements rather than a set group itinerary
- Easy pace, with the festival and mudmen day as the two main fixed activities
