About this trip
Ten days across Malaysian Borneo, moving through rainforest, river and coast to get properly close to the region's wildlife. Expect orangutans, river cruises and jungle stays rather than beach lounging, with some city time bookending it in Kota Kinabalu.
Accommodation ranges from standard hotels to jungle lodges, and the lodges trade polish for location — you're there for the surroundings, not the thread count.
There's a fair amount of ground to cover, so some days involve longer drives in a shared private vehicle. These are broken up with stops along the way, and it's as much part of the trip as the destinations themselves.
What you'll do
- Watch orangutans up close at the Sepilok rehabilitation centre
- Cruise the Kinabatangan River spotting wildlife along the banks
- Relax on the beaches of Manukan Island
- Explore traditional villages en route through Borneo
- Take in city life in Kota Kinabalu
- Some long travel days as you cover a lot of ground, with stops built in to break up the driving
- Group travel in a private vehicle can feel snug at times
- Jungle lodge stays offer fewer amenities than standard hotels, in exchange for the location
Worth it if you're reasonably fit, prepared for basic conditions, and want genuine wildlife and culture with standout guides. Think twice if you need comfort, reliability with pre-tour comms, or have mobility issues.
- Tour guides (Beverly, Stephanie, Awang, Roas) are exceptionally knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely invested in group experience.
- Wildlife sightings are reliably excellent: orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, crocodiles consistently spotted across reviews.
- This is a basic, not comfort tour with significant walking, heat, humidity, and poor sanitation standards that catch unprepared travellers off-guard.
- Pre-tour communication from Intrepid is unreliable; confirmation emails don't guarantee you're actually booked despite being charged.
