About this trip
Eight days through Oman, starting in Muscat and the old port district of Muttrah, then out into the desert and mountains. You'll spend time in Islamic forts and mud-brick villages, wander souqs stacked with silver and spice, and get a real sense of the country's history before heading into wilder terrain.
A night in the Wahiba Sands puts you among the dunes with Bedouin hosts, and the trip also takes in the canyon country of Jebel Shams and Wadi Bani Awf, where the landscape does the talking. You end back on the coast in Muscat.
Most of the travel between sites is done in 4x4 convoy, which shapes the pace and feel of the trip as much as the destinations do.
What you'll do
- Explore Muscat and the old port area of Muttrah
- Visit Islamic forts and mud-brick villages
- Browse souqs selling silver and spices
- Spend a night in the Wahiba Sands with Bedouin hosts
- Take in the canyon views at Jebel Shams and Wadi Bani Awf
- Travel is mostly by 4x4 in convoy, so you may not always be in the same vehicle as your leader, and some drivers may not speak English
- Mosque visits require modest dress — women need heads, chest, arms and legs covered in loose clothing, men need arms and legs covered
Worth it if you're happy driving long days for stunning, varied scenery and don't need extensive free time. Think twice if you want deep local immersion or flexible shopping/exploration time.
- Guide quality varies significantly; Said and Hamad earned genuine praise for knowledge and engagement with the group.
- Packed itinerary leaves tight windows; 1.5 hours in Nizwa souk forced choices between fort and shopping.
- Guide involvement uneven; some don't join group dinners and can be dismissive when answering repeat questions.
- Substantial driving required but repaid by varied landscapes, quality accommodation outside Muscat, and curated photo stops.
