About this trip

This is an overland journey through Kenya and Tanzania by 4WD, covering some of East Africa's best-known wildlife areas before finishing with unescorted time on the beaches of Zanzibar.

You'll spend days on game drives through the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, looking for the Big Five, and get time with Maasai and Hadzabe communities to learn about their customs directly from tribal elders. One night is spent camping in the Serengeti with no barriers between you and the surrounding wildlife.

Expect long drive days between parks, with the emphasis as much on the camaraderie of group travel as the destinations themselves. The trip ends with a stretch in Zanzibar where you're free to explore without a leader, backed up by local representatives if you need help.

What you'll do

  • Game drives through the Maasai Mara National Reserve
  • Wildlife spotting in the Serengeti National Park
  • Visit the Ngorongoro Crater
  • See the scale of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake
  • Meet Maasai and Hadzabe communities and hear from tribal elders
  • Unescorted beach time in Zanzibar
Good to know
  • 4WD overland trip with long drive days between parks — it's as much about the journey as the destinations
  • Early starts are common, either for better safari conditions or to beat traffic on long travel days
  • One night camping in a tented camp in the Serengeti with no barriers from wildlife — you'll need to follow your leader's safety advice
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want genuine wildlife encounters and strong local guides. Think twice if you need creature comforts, reliable WiFi, or card payments everywhere.

  • Guides and drivers consistently excellent; Zach and Lucky Steve made the difference between good and unforgettable.
  • Roads are genuinely bumpy, hot showers not guaranteed, and many lodges accept cash only—bring Tanzanian Shilling.
  • WiFi patchy and often confined to reception areas; food repetitive; one lodge is basic glamping, not hotel standard.
  • Big 5 sightings achieved, but no safari guarantees everything; camera quality matters more than you'd think for photos.
