About this trip
Ten days through Central Europe's less-obvious cities, starting in Budapest and ending in Dubrovnik, with Belgrade, Sarajevo and Mostar in between. It's a route that mixes recent history with old towns and a fair amount of travel time on public transport.
A local leader travels with you and helps shape the free time, but this isn't a trip where every hour is planned. You'll have space to explore each city on your own terms alongside a small group.
What you'll do
- Explore Budapest's cosmopolitan streets
- Get a feel for Belgrade, a city on the rise
- Learn about the war years in Sarajevo
- Visit the Old Bridge in Mostar
- Wander the medieval streets of Dubrovnik
- You'll travel between cities by public transport, so pack light and be ready to carry your own luggage up stairs and over cobbles
- Accommodation is basic, sometimes with shared bathrooms and hotels that only have stairs, no lift
- Plenty of free time on this trip, with your leader offering suggestions rather than a packed schedule
Worth it if you're curious about lesser-known Balkan cities and don't mind long coach days. Think twice if you need comfort accommodation or prefer a leisurely pace.
- Tour leaders genuinely knowledgeable and energetic; guides like Meike invest real effort getting to know you personally.
- Sarajevo and Kotor are standout stops worth the trip; pre-reading the history dramatically improves your experience of difficult recent events.
- Some hotels substandard: Belgrade hostel had heavy smoking smell, stained furniture, torn curtains despite no-smoking policy.
- Fast-paced itinerary covers 9 destinations in 10 days; mini-buses sometimes cram 15 people instead of scheduled rail legs.
