About this trip
This 14-day route runs the length of Java before crossing into Bali, taking in cities, mountains, jungle and coast along the way. You'll move between Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bandung, then out to volcanic highlands and nature reserves before finishing on Bali's quieter north coast.
It's a lot of ground covered in a fairly short time, with long overland journeys between stops, including trains where possible to ease the miles. The pace is steady rather than relaxed, but there's a stretch of proper downtime by the sea in Permuteran at the end.
What you'll do
- Explore Jakarta and the cultural hub of Yogyakarta
- Eat your way through Bandung's food scene
- Hike up Mt Bromo for sunrise views over the countryside
- Walk through the jungle at Seloliman Nature Reserve
- Cross to Bali's north coast and unwind on the beach at Permuteran
- Long travel days are part of this trip — some journeys run for many hours, with delays possible
- You'll carry your own bags on and off trains, so pack light
- Involves a fair amount of hiking and cycling, so a reasonable fitness level helps
Worth it if you enjoy train travel, local immersion, and capable guides. Think twice if you prefer staying put or aren't reasonably fit.
- Guides (Ida, Tantan) consistently went above and beyond, including arranging local home-cooked meals during train journeys.
- Train travel through Java was the standout highlight, offering genuine village interaction and local culture exposure throughout.
- Constant location changes mean few 3-night stays; pack light and expect frequent packing and unpacking cycles.
- Trip requires reasonable fitness; some activities proved difficult for less athletic participants despite moderate rating.
