About this trip
Eight days through northern Thailand, moving from the pace of Bangkok to the hills around Chiang Mai and a two-day trek into hilltribe villages.
Expect a mix of city and jungle: night markets and bars in Bangkok, temples, a kayaking session, waterfalls, and time with elephants, all in the company of a small group.
It's a fast-paced route that covers a lot of ground, using overnight trains as well as road transport, so there's a real sense of travelling like a local alongside the sightseeing.
What you'll do
- Explore Bangkok's night markets and bars
- Trek through hilltribe villages outside Chiang Mai
- Kayak through northern Thailand's scenery
- Visit waterfalls and spend time with elephants
- Take in Chiang Mai's temples and nightlife
- The two-day trek is physically demanding, with a lot of walking and an overnight pack to carry — a good fitness level helps
- Wet season (May to October) can mean muddy, slippery trails on the trek — sturdy shoes or boots recommended
- Two overnight trains are part of the journey — basic, sometimes shared with strangers, but a genuine way to travel locally
Worth it if you want a well-organised intro to Northern Thailand with genuinely excellent local guides. Think twice if you're after challenging hikes or prefer minimal travel days.
- Tour guides consistently exceptional: knowledgeable locals who felt like friends, helped with extra bookings, dietary needs, and genuine cultural insight.
- Hiking underwhelming for adults; 3-4 hour walks described as too easy, suggesting itinerary skews toward fitness novices.
- Significant time on buses between locations; budget extra cash for activities and meals not included in base price.
- Accommodation is genuinely comfortable for 'basic' tier but transportation costs should be bundled in; expect modest lodgings throughout.
