About this trip
This is a 10-day safari built around one of the natural world's biggest spectacles: the wildebeest migration crossing the Grumeti and Mara Rivers as the herds push north from the Serengeti towards Kenya.
Timed for July through September, you follow the migration's path through four of Tanzania's best-known parks, with the river crossings themselves as the centrepiece — dramatic, unpredictable, and shared with a fair number of waiting crocodiles.
Alongside the migration you cover the wider Northern Circuit, giving a rounded picture of Tanzania's landscapes and wildlife rather than just one big moment.
What you'll do
- Watch wildebeest attempt the crossing of the Grumeti River
- Witness the Mara River crossing, crocodiles included
- Explore Tarangire National Park's elephant herds and baobabs
- Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for dense wildlife viewing
- Game drive across the plains of Serengeti National Park
- Spot flamingos and hippos at Lake Manyara
- River crossings depend on the migration's timing and location, so sightings aren't guaranteed on any given day
- Vehicles are set up with photographers in mind, taking 2-3 pax, while standard leisure vehicles carry up to 7
- Best suited to July-September travel, when the herds are moving through this stretch of their route
Worth it if you book direct with Steppe Dogs, nail down transport costs upfront, and time it for July-August migration. Think twice if you need luxury isolation or can't handle split accommodation groups.
- Hidden airport transfer fees of $100+ per person charged after booking; negotiate or arrange cheaper alternatives independently.
- Groups split across multiple camps an hour apart added six extra driving hours daily; poor logistical coordination during high season.
- Guides consistently exceptional at spotting Big Five and diverse wildlife; Joseph Mashine and the driver team genuinely skilled trackers.
- Ten days hitting multiple parks breaks up the long Serengeti drive; migration timing (July-August) crucial for meaningful crossings.
