About this trip
Six days that pair Vietnam's mountains with its most famous bay, staying in comfortable to luxury accommodation throughout. You start inland in the Mai Chau Valley before finishing on the water in Halong Bay, with a slice of Hanoi city life in between.
Days are split between quiet, green scenery and one of the world's great limestone seascapes, with a night on board a cruise ship as the centrepiece. There's culture too, from a Thai ethnic village to Hanoi's Old Quarter and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
It's a comfortable, well-paced trip rather than a hard-adventure one — think good food, good views, and a mix of relaxation and light activity.
What you'll do
- Stay at Ba Khan Village Resort in the Mai Chau Valley
- Visit Ba Khan village and learn about Thai ethnic culture
- Tour Hanoi's Old Quarter and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
- Overnight on a Halong Bay cruise ship
- Kayak and visit a floating village in Halong Bay
- Join a Vietnamese cooking demonstration on board
- Mix of mountain resort, city touring and a cruise, so pace and setting change daily
- Suits travellers who want comfort and culture rather than budget backpacking
Worth it if you value stellar local guides and seamless organisation. Think twice if you expect true luxury food or want deeper cultural immersion.
- Guide Danny goes genuinely above and beyond: buys sim cards, adapts itineraries, helps after the tour ends.
- Halong Bay cruise is overcrowded with tourists despite 'luxury' tag; food falls short of luxury promise.
- Anise Hotel in Hanoi doesn't meet 3-star standards; pre-arrival accommodation quality is unreliable.
- Mountain resorts like Bakhan Village are excellent; consider extending stays there if time allows.
