About this trip
This is a seven-day journey through Tamil Nadu's great temple towns, built for travellers who want to see South India's religious architecture up close and take part in the rituals, not just photograph them from the gate.
You start in Chennai and work your way south through Trichy, Thanjavur, Madurai, Rameshwaram and finally Kanyakumari, visiting a major temple in each — from the vast Srirangam complex to the intricately carved Meenakshi Mandir.
It runs as a private, partially guided tour with a guaranteed departure, so it goes ahead even if you book as a solo traveller.
What you'll do
- Visit Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Chennai, dedicated to Lord Shiva
- See the Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam, one of the largest religious complexes in the world
- Explore the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur
- Walk through Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, dedicated to Parvati and Shiva
- Visit the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameshwaram, linked to the Ramayana
- End at Kanyakumari, India's southernmost point, with the Vivekananda Memorial and its beaches
- A temple-focused itinerary with opportunities to take part in religious rituals, not just sightsee
- Partially guided, so some days you'll have independent time
- Suits families and those travelling over Christmas and New Year as well as solo travellers, given the guaranteed departure
Worth it if you're flexible, get a good guide and driver, and don't mind verifying what's actually included. Think twice if you need consistent quality across all suppliers or booked elephant sanctuaries.
- Hotel quality varies wildly; some were described as disgusting and in dangerous areas. Company sometimes upgrades mid-tour but not reliably.
- Guide quality is inconsistent. Some were knowledgeable and bilingual; others completely incomprehensible with poor English and limited knowledge.
- Elephant sanctuary advertised as rescue centre is actually a commercial riding area; travellers paid extra expecting rescued elephants, got rides instead.
- When drivers and guides are good, they genuinely elevate the trip: going off-itinerary, being safe for solo travellers, adjusting pace on request.
