About this trip
This six-day loop out of Zurich takes you through the classic Swiss set pieces, from Lucerne's old town to the high Alps and back down to the Rhine. You'll cover a lot of ground, but it's all done by train and coach with the sightseeing done for you.
Expect a mix of lakes, mountains and small towns, Lake Thun and Interlaken, the peaks around Grindelwald, then the dramatic crossing into the Engadin valley via the Bernina line to St Moritz. The second half turns cultural, taking in the village that inspired Heidi, Appenzell's cheesemaking traditions, and the monastery at St Gallen.
It's an easy-paced, fully guided tour built for people who want to see the highlights without organising the logistics themselves.
What you'll do
- Explore Lucerne's historic old town and lakeside landmarks
- Visit St Beatus Caves above Lake Thun
- Ride the Rigi cogwheel train for panoramic mountain views
- Cross the Alps on the UNESCO Bernina railway past Morteratsch Glacier
- Wander Maienfeld, the village that inspired Heidi, and see Appenzell's cheese-making heritage
- Finish at Rhine Falls and Kyburg Castle near Winterthur
- Sightseeing-focused and fully guided, with a good deal of coach and train travel between stops
- Easy pace overall, but each day covers a distinct destination
Worth it if you get an engaged guide like Amalia or Nadia and don't mind no air conditioning. Think twice if you're heat-sensitive or expect detailed local history without doing your own research.
- Hotels lack air conditioning; summer heat makes sleeping difficult despite full days of touring.
- Guide quality varies wildly; some provide minimal information and send groups off to explore alone constantly.
- Hidden extra costs appear mid-tour for activities like gondolas; options presented only when included activities become impossible.
- Small groups and exceptional guides like Amalia and Nadia create genuinely warm experiences; drivers often compensate brilliantly.
