About this trip
This 14-day trip takes you from Kathmandu's temples and bazaars across the Himalayas to the high plateau of Tibet, ending with the sacred city of Lhasa. It's a journey of contrasts — Nepal's lush valleys give way to the stark, high-altitude landscapes of the Tibetan plateau.
You start in Kathmandu with visits to its major religious sites, then head to Pokhara for lake views and mountain scenery before the overland crossing into Tibet. From there the pace turns towards altitude and monasteries, with Lhasa as the cultural high point before the return journey to Kathmandu.
This suits travellers keen on culture and spirituality as much as scenery — expect a lot of temples, monasteries, and long drives through dramatic terrain.
What you'll do
- Visit Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa and Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu
- Watch sunrise over the Annapurna range from Sarangkot
- Boat ride on Phewa Lake and visit Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave in Pokhara
- Cross into Tibet via Kyirong and travel through high-altitude Tingri and Lhatse
- See Mt. Cho Oyu and Mt. Shishapangma from the Tibetan plateau
- Explore the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street in Lhasa
- Involves significant time at high altitude, including overnight stays in Tibetan towns above 4,000 metres
- Long overland drives connect the main sites, so travel days can be lengthy
- Travellers from certain countries need to arrange a China Group Visa in advance, as it cannot be obtained in Nepal
Cheapest live departure per day, in £, recorded by our tracker since 16 Jul. Never a brochure “was” price.
Worth it if you're fit, flexible with comfort, and genuinely interested in Tibetan culture. Think twice if you need luxury lodging, hate long bus rides, or want frequent photo stops.
- Guides are experienced, educated, speak proper English, and deliver genuine cultural insight throughout.
- Nepal road journey to Pokhara is slow, long, and on terrible roads with no photo stops despite views.
- Tibet accommodation is deliberately non-luxury; expect basic lodgings even though the experience justifies it.
- Everest Base Camp and Potala Palace visits are genuinely memorable but require fitness for high altitude and crowded climbing.
