About this trip
Norway from Oslo to the Arctic, travelling north by train, ferry and bus through cities, coastline and island scenery that changes character with every stage.
You start in Oslo and head to Trondheim, the old Viking capital, before reaching the Lofoten Islands and finishing in Tromso. It's a trip built around watching the landscape shift rather than ticking off single sights, with a good stretch of time simply spent looking out of a window.
Fully guided throughout, with a leader on hand to help you navigate costs, weather and logistics in a part of the world that can be both remote and pricey.
What you'll do
- Visit Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, resting place of St Olav
- Travel through the Lofoten Islands by land and water
- Explore Tromso, the cultural hub of the Arctic north
- Join optional activities such as e-biking or RIB boating
- Cross the Arctic Circle on the journey north
- Public transport is the main mode of travel between stops, so pack light enough to carry your own luggage up stairs and over cobbles
- Expect cold conditions, especially early and late in the season, so bring proper layers
- Scandinavia is an expensive region, particularly for eating out, though your leader can advise on keeping costs down
Worth it if you want scenic variety and a flexible pace with a strong guide. Think twice if you need heavy local integration or prefer established, polished itineraries.
- Tour leader makes or breaks it—excellent guides elevate sightseeing with local knowledge and smooth logistics.
- Trip planning was inconsistent; one leader hadn't visited all locations before, another had to research on the fly.
- Fast-paced itinerary with decent time for hiking and exploration, but not everyone found the intensity manageable.
- Limited local guides and few organised activities beyond sightseeing; more cultural engagement could strengthen the experience.
