About this trip
Twelve days through the Baltic states, travelling overland from Helsinki down to Vilnius, taking in Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania along the way. You move between the medieval old town of Tallinn, the bars of Riga and the Baroque streets of Vilnius, with plenty of free time built in to explore each place at your own pace.
Expect a mix of city wandering and outdoor time — markets, museums, architecture, a spot of kayaking and some forest hiking. Meals with local hosts give you a more personal take on the region alongside the sightseeing.
This is a guided small-group trip aimed at travellers who want the history and culture of the Baltics without having to plan the logistics themselves.
What you'll do
- Explore the medieval old town of Tallinn
- Take in Riga's bar scene and architecture
- Wander the Baroque streets of Vilnius
- Browse colourful local markets
- Kayak on Lithuanian lakes
- Hike through forest trails
- Travel is by public transport, so pack light — you'll need to lift your own luggage onto racks and up stairs
- A few long travel days by public transport, up to around 7 hours
- Hotel rooms in Europe tend to be small, sometimes with shared bathrooms, and often without air conditioning
Worth it if you're fit, curious about Baltic history, and embrace basic European accommodation. Think twice if you need air con, dislike mandatory insurance costs, or prefer less walking.
- Guide quality consistently excellent; Agata and Kati specifically praised for depth and knowledge.
- Small groups (six people) foster genuine friendships and mix of nationalities; real interaction with locals.
- Travel insurance mandatory but expensive and not included in advertised price; hidden cost surprise.
- Significant daily walking (30 mins-plus to hotels with full bags, plus 800-step climbs) requires genuine fitness.
