About this trip
A 12-day family trip through Japan, covering Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto by bullet train and on foot, with a mix of culture, sightseeing and downtime built in.
Days take in imperial history, calligraphy, a ropeway ride for Mt Fuji views and a soak in an onsen, with a local leader on hand throughout to help navigate and explain what you're seeing.
It's active by design — you're moving through stations and cities on foot most days — balanced with slower stretches to let everyone recover, especially the ryokan stay in Hakone.
What you'll do
- Learn calligraphy in Tokyo
- Ride the Hakone Ropeway for views of Mt Fuji
- Travel between cities by bullet train
- Stay at a traditional ryokan in Hakone with the option of futon and onsen bath
- Explore historical sites and palaces in Kyoto
- Japan is explored mainly on foot and by public transport, so you'll need to be comfortable walking and managing your own luggage through busy stations
- At the Hakone ryokan you can choose a futon on tatami flooring or a Western-style bed and bathroom
- Rooms in Japan tend to be smaller than average, and larger families may be split across two rooms where triple or quad shares aren't available
