About this trip
Nine days overland from Zanzibar's Stone Town to Nairobi, travelling by purpose-built vehicle through some of Tanzania's most varied landscapes, from the Usambara Mountains to the Serengeti plains.
This is a hands-on trip. You set up your own tent, camp in the wild with no barriers between you and the animals, and go without wi-fi most nights. Days are built around game drives and early starts, chasing the best light and the best chance of sightings.
Alongside the wildlife, you get a look at everyday Tanzanian life through village stays, a cooking session and a local craft session, plus a hike to the Irente viewpoint in the Usambaras.
What you'll do
- Game drives in the Serengeti tracking lions, elephants and rhinos
- Camp in the wild with no barriers between you and the animals
- Hike to the Irente viewpoint in the Usambara Mountains
- Village stay with local cooking and craft sessions
- Travel overland by purpose-built vehicle across Tanzania
- Overland style — you help set up your own tent and travel as a group in a shared vehicle
- Expect early starts most days, either for game drives or to cover long travel distances
- The Irente viewpoint hike isn't strenuous but does need a reasonable level of fitness
Worth it if you're after ethical travel, stellar guides, and don't mind camping roughness. Think twice if you need creature comforts or dislike early starts.
- Tour leaders (Nash, Victor, Issa, Muriuki) genuinely knowledgeable, upbeat, and make you feel part of a team rather than a tourist.
- Food quality consistently praised, including vegetarian options; chef and team accommodating with shared camp duties building group cohesion.
- Intrepid's responsible travel approach benefits local communities and wildlife without feeling exploitative; guides encourage cultural nuance over surface tourism.
- Camping in public campsites is basic; bring earplugs for noise, expect simple facilities, and accept upgrades aren't always available.
