About this trip
Eleven days across Taiwan, moving from Taipei's street food stalls to indigenous communities, mountain lakes, tea farms and a working fishing village, with a local leader guiding you throughout.
You start in Taipei eating your way through the city's food scene, then head to Yilan to spend time with an Indigenous community over a home-cooked lunch. From there it's on to the pagodas and trails of Sun Moon Lake, a tea farm and Buddhist monastery near Chiayi, and a scenic train ride through Alishan's forests.
The pace is brisk and the days are full, with mostly private transport between stops so you can cover a lot of ground without losing time to logistics.
What you'll do
- Eat your way through Taipei's street food scene
- Meet an Indigenous community in Yilan and share a home-cooked lunch
- Walk the trails and pagodas around Sun Moon Lake
- Visit a tea farm and meet nuns at a Buddhist monastery near Chiayi
- Take a scenic train through Alishan's tropical forests
- Pick clams at a traditional fishing village
- Fast-paced with a lot of ground covered — expect plenty of walking and use of Taipei's metro
- Includes some hiking and cycling that isn't strenuous but does call for a reasonable level of fitness
- Taipei time is limited, so it's worth arranging extra nights there before or after the trip
Worth it if you want authentic Taiwan culture and a small group with a stellar guide. Think twice if you expect culinary immersion or packed itineraries.
- Tour guides Logan and Irene were exceptional; travellers specifically praised their local knowledge and cultural insight.
- Food experiences disappointing: guide took group to fast food rather than showcasing Taiwanese cuisine despite it being a draw.
- Eleven days feels padded; multiple reviewers felt content would fit better in seven days with excessive road time.
- Typhoon cancellations occurred but were overly cautious; minimal rain fell, suggesting unnecessary activity disruptions.
