About this trip
This nine-day route takes you through Kerala's varied landscape, from hill country to backwaters to coast, without trying to cram in a single theme.
You move from the tea-covered hills of Munnar to the wildlife sanctuary at Periyar, then down through the backwaters of Kumarakom and Alleppey before finishing on the beaches of Kovalam.
It is a broad introduction to Kerala rather than a deep dive into any one place, covering nature, wildlife and coast in one go.
What you'll do
- Take in the hill scenery around Munnar
- Visit Periyar wildlife sanctuary
- Drift through the backwaters of Kumarakom
- Stay aboard a traditional houseboat in Alleppey
- Relax on the white sand beaches of Kovalam
- You change location several times over the nine days, so expect a fair amount of travel between stops
- Includes a houseboat stay, which suits those happy with simple, slower-paced accommodation for a night
- Good fit if you want a mix of hills, wildlife and beach rather than one focus
Worth it if you value a well-planned itinerary, reliable drivers, and Kerala's landscapes. Think twice if you need consistent English-speaking guides or worry about vehicle condition.
- Driver quality is genuinely excellent; multiple guests praised safe, personable drivers who don't use phones whilst driving.
- Itinerary planning is solid with sensible pacing across locations; Munnar tea plantations and houseboats particularly highlighted.
- One guest's minibus literally fell apart mid-trip with broken seats; guide gave poor communication and hotels changed without notice.
- Guide presence varies wildly; solo travellers sometimes get none, and English-speaking guide quality is inconsistent across the trip.
