About this trip
Eight days tracing the Douro river from Porto out to the Spanish border and back, with the boat as your base and a string of small riverside towns as your daily stops.
You start in Villa Nova de Gaia and move steadily upriver through Régua and Pinhão to Barca d'Alva and Vega Terron, before retracing the route back through Pinhão, Régua and Leverinho to Porto. It's a slow, scenic way to see the Douro valley rather than a dash between sights.
With Discovery, Family and Relaxing all part of the mix, this suits people happy to let the river set the pace and dip into local towns along the way rather than chase a packed itinerary.
What you'll do
- Cruise the Douro from Villa Nova de Gaia to the Spanish border and back
- Stop in the terraced vineyard town of Pinhão
- Visit Régua, gateway to the Douro wine region
- Reach Barca d'Alva and Vega Terron near the Spanish frontier
- Pass through Leverinho on the return leg upriver to Porto
- Partially guided, so you'll have some free time in port towns to explore on your own
- Relaxing pace suited to families and travellers who don't want a rushed schedule
Worth it if you value excellent food, generous drinks, and attentive crew on a well-run river cruise. Think twice if you need reliable WiFi, dietary accommodations beyond basics, or prefer English-language priority.
- Crew consistently professional and welcoming; Cruise Director Gaby and guide Mario earned genuine praise across multiple reviews.
- Food quality and free drinks generous and excellent; meals consistently well-prepared and inviting across all reviews.
- WiFi patchy or absent in some cabins; ship would not supply router, forcing guests to buy own data.
- German-language heavily favoured in presentations and buffet labelling; English passengers effectively second-tier despite bilingual advertised tour.
