About this trip
Seven days based around Leh, the high-desert city in the Indian Himalayas, taking in its Buddhist heritage sites, dramatic mountain passes and high-altitude lakes.
This is a private, fully guided trip, so the pace and route are shaped around your group rather than a fixed itinerary shared with strangers. Expect long drives between sights given the terrain and altitude.
Good for families or a small private group wanting a mix of culture and mountain scenery without organising the logistics of altitude travel yourselves.
What you'll do
- Visit the 17th-century Leh Palace, built along the lines of Tibet's Potala Palace
- Cross Khardung-La, one of the world's highest motorable passes at around 18,300ft
- See Pangong Lake, a high-altitude lake at roughly 4,350m
- Explore Leh's Buddhist sites and old town
- High altitude throughout — Leh itself sits above 3,500m, so allow time to acclimatise
- Private and fully guided, so timings can flex to suit your group
- Suited to families as well as couples or friends travelling together
Worth it if you love high-altitude landscapes, monasteries, and can handle rough roads. Think twice if you need consistent hotel service or want to minimise passes crossed.
- Pangong Lake camping and Nubra Valley camel safaris genuinely memorable; guides like Riyaz and Aslam deliver real cultural insights.
- Changla Pass road is very poor; crossing it twice on some itineraries wastes time when single-crossing routes exist via Nubra.
- Ladakh Imperial hotel had good rooms but poor service; solo female travellers incur extra cost for mandatory additional female guide.
- Trip well-organised by Alkof Holidays overall; they accommodate custom requests like extra monastery days if asked in advance.
