About this trip
Ten days that take in the big three of Egyptian travel: Cairo, a Nile cruise, and Alexandria on the coast. You move from the pyramids at Giza to temples along the Nile, then fly back north to the Mediterranean for a change of pace.
Expect a lot of ground covered — ancient sites, museums, markets and tombs — with a guide leading you through the history at each stop rather than left to work it out from a guidebook.
It suits a family or group wanting a structured, well-explained introduction to Egypt's major monuments rather than a slow, independent wander.
What you'll do
- Explore the Giza Pyramids and step inside the story of Sakkara and Memphis
- Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum and the older Egyptian Museum in Cairo
- Wander Khan El Khalili bazaar and Old Cairo's Citadel
- Cruise the Nile, stopping at Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Deir El Bahary
- See Edfu and Kom Ombo temples plus the High Dam and Philae at Aswan
- Finish in Alexandria with the Bibliotheca, Qaitbay Citadel and the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa
- A domestic flight connects the Nile cruise leg to Alexandria
- Fully guided throughout, with sightseeing most days rather than free time
- Sites are visited at a fairly brisk pace given the amount covered in 10 days
Worth it if you're flexible with early starts and can handle logistical quirks. Think twice if you need reliability, comfort, or dislike tipping pressure.
- Guides are genuinely knowledgeable and well-connected locally; they get you to sites efficiently and then give you space to explore.
- Schedule is gruelling with mandatory 5.30am starts to beat queues; you'll miss sites like Kom Ombo due to tight port times.
- Logistical inconsistencies: late airport pickups, guides without ID, drivers unreachable on phone, and relentless tipping requests despite included transport.
- Nile cruise itself is excellent; hotels solid. Best experienced as a private tour rather than group, which minimises friction.
