Small Group: Balkan Extended - Ljubljana to Dubrovnik

Ljubljana → Dubrovnik 11 days Up to 24

About this trip

Eleven days moving from Slovenia's capital down the Adriatic coast to Dubrovnik, taking in mountains, caves, lakes and islands along the way. You start in Ljubljana, head to Lake Bled and the Postojna Cave system, then cross into Istria and Croatia for truffles, waterfalls and coastline.

The pace is easy and the group small, with plenty of local food and wine built in — from Karst region wine to Istrian truffles and coastal oysters. It's a broad sweep of the Balkans rather than a deep dive into any one place, well suited to families or anyone wanting a guided introduction to the region.

What you'll do

  • Wander Ljubljana's old town and riverside
  • See the turquoise water and island church at Lake Bled
  • Walk through the underground chambers of Postojna Cave
  • Taste wine in Slovenia's Karst region and truffles around Motovun
  • Explore the waterfalls and lakes of Plitvice Lakes National Park
  • Spend time in Trogir, Split and on the island of Hvar before finishing in Dubrovnik
Good to know
  • Fully guided throughout, with a relaxed, easy pace
  • Covers a lot of ground across three countries in 11 days, so expect regular travel days between stops
  • Suits families and mixed groups looking for a broad overview rather than a slow, single-base stay
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want genuine local insight and comfortable travel through stunning scenery. Think twice if you're after curated 'experiences' – some feel poorly planned and won't deliver.

  • Guide quality makes or breaks this tour; Dragan, Bogdan, and Marko earned genuine praise for warmth, knowledge, and personal attention.
  • The 'Experience More' add-ons are hit-and-miss: third winery was a backyard shed, truffle hunt showed almost nothing, oyster tasting tiny.
  • Last-minute guide swap in Dubrovnik left visitors disappointed; original guide cancelled for a ship, suggesting staff flexibility issues.
  • Ljubljana hotel subpar compared to others; Plitvice Lakes needs decent fitness for full appreciation; 13-person groups mean mixed attention from guides.
