Essence of Bhutan

Start & end in Paro 10 days Up to 10

About this trip

Ten days through Bhutan with a private guide, taking in four western districts and two central ones as you move from the high Himalayan ranges into the country's cultural heartland.

Expect old capitals, ancient Dzongs, sacred wall paintings, and a night at a family homestead 3,000 metres up in a glacial valley, eating home-cooked Bhutanese food and seeing farm life close up. The trip builds to a hike up to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, built into an 800-metre cliff face.

It's a culture-first trip at an easy pace, with plenty of time built in to talk with local people and sit with the temples and monasteries rather than rush past them.

What you'll do

  • Hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) monastery on its cliff face
  • Stay overnight at a family homestead 3,000m up in a glacial valley
  • Visit Bhutan's old capitals and their Dzongs (fortresses)
  • Explore rural villages in central Bhutan
  • See ancient temples and traditional Bhutanese wall paintings and architecture
Good to know
  • Only two airlines fly into Bhutan and seats book out months ahead, especially in peak season, so sort flights early
  • Travelled with a private guide throughout, at an easy pace suited to families and mixed groups
  • One night is a homestay at altitude, more rustic than the hotel nights either side

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you value genuine local connection and guides who treat you like friends. Think twice if you need flexibility around Bhutan's mandatory agency requirement.

  • Guides and drivers consistently go above and beyond, treating travellers as friends rather than clients.
  • Private car with dedicated guide means fully customizable itinerary tailored to your interests and pace.
  • Bhutanese food is genuinely spicy; one traveller fainted from ema datshi despite guide support.
  • Responsive communication and flexible planning from agency staff before and during the trip.
