About this trip
Sri Lanka opens up differently from a bike saddle. You take the back roads rather than the main routes, riding past tea hills, village life and stretches of coast that most visitors only see through a bus window.
The route mixes physical challenge with sightseeing: climbing through the hill country around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, then stopping at Sigiriya's rock fortress and the cave temples of Dambulla. A safari in Yala National Park adds a different pace, tracking wildlife including its leopards.
It ends on the south coast, swapping hills for golden-sand beaches after two weeks on the road.
What you'll do
- Ride quiet back roads across the island
- Cycle the hill climbs around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya
- Explore the rock fortress at Sigiriya
- Visit the sacred cave temples of Dambulla
- Safari in Yala National Park in search of leopards
- Finish on the beaches of the south coast
- Moderate difficulty — expect real hill climbs, particularly around Nuwara Eliya
- Fully guided group trip throughout
Worth it if you're moderately fit and want authentic countryside cycling with exceptional leadership. Think twice if hotel consistency matters more than varied accommodation.
- Tour leader Suresh consistently praised as exceptionally service-oriented, knowledgeable, and attentive to individual needs throughout.
- Back roads routing genuinely avoids tourist traps; cycling proves an effective way to access authentic rural Sri Lankan life and culture.
- Hotel quality varies noticeably across the trip; some properties better than others, inconsistency noted by multiple reviewers.
- Terrain includes serious hill climbs with 2000m ascents; saddle soreness and heat/humidity require reasonable fitness and prior conditioning.
